Check for Duplicate Records Before Insertion
Hi,
Does anyone have any sugestions as to the best way to achieve the following?
I want to display a list of products in a GridView. Against each product I want to place a button which will add the product to a "wish list" table.
I need to be able to check that the product has not already been inserted into the wish list.
Either suggested methods or links to tutorials will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Just do a;
SELECT ProductID FROM WishListTable WHERE ProductID = <selected Product ID>
If you don't get an empty result set back you know the product is already there. Or if you are using SQL Server Stored Procedures;
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM WishListTable WHERE ProductID = <selected Product ID>) INSERT INTO WishListTable ...|||
Thanks for your answer.
I started searching for a tutorial on this and found one athttp://aspalliance.com/687
I've incorporated your suggestion and the tutorial into my system and it works a treat.

CHECK Constraint to prevent a conditional duplicate
I need to enforce that a table does not have "duplicates" for a
specific status type in the table.
If the column "STATUS" = 2, then there can not be more than one row
with a specific "ID" column.
I can not use a unique key constraint because duplicate values for this
combo of columns is valid for the status = 1.
Just when the status = 2, there can not be any other rows with the same
ID and status = 2.
Any ideas?

Hi Paul,
Apart from the trigger Tibor suggests, there are two other options:
1. Use an indexed view:
CREATE VIEW Status2Only
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
SELECT SpecificID -- You may add other columns,
-- if that helps for other purposes
FROM dbo.MyTable
WHERE Status = 2
go
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX NoDupsFor2 ON Status2Only(SpecificID)
go
2. Use a computed column (assuming PKCol is the primary key):
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD HelperColumn AS CASE
WHEN Status = 2
THEN SpecificID
ELSE PKCol
END
go
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD CONSTRAINT NoDupsFor2 UNIQUE (Status, HelperColumn)
go
(both versions untested - bewarer of typos!)

Charting Issue
I have run into a very strange situation and have been unable to locate
the cause of the problem. Running SQL Reporting Services 2000 and
pulling data from an Oracle db for this specific report.
The report is very simple. A bar chart with 2 data sets. One
represented as bars, the other represented as a line. Below the chart
is a table with the text representation of the data being used for the
chart.
On the chart, the data is displayed using the same y-axis scale.
For some reason when I run a report for a specific set of criteria I
get the correct data in the table, but the graph is messed up. The
2nd data point for my line has a value of 39.30 but the line on the
chart draws up to the 120 mark. The strange thing is that the marker
icon shows the value of 39.30.
My data looks something like this:
Bar Line
39.30 39.30
0 39.30
56.50 43.90
17.50 41.40
All of the points on the line show the correct value and are in the
right position except for the 2nd point. It shows the correct value
at the point, but the line shoots up to the 120 mark on the y-axis.
I have tried this running it both on the server and also in DebugLocal
mode on my development system.
I need to get this resolved ASAP for the executive management team.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Mike
If you see the Value expression for line chart it must
SUM(Fields!ColumnName.Value).
I beleive becuase of the data some where it is summing the value.
