check numeric data type in SSIS

Dear All,

the situation is that i have a column data comes from flat file and all i want to do is to check that the incoming column is numeric(12,3) and if the incoming data exceed that size "12,3" exception or redirect the row is happened.

the problem that i try to apply that with the data conversion or Derived column component but it in case of the scale of the incoming data exceed 3 the component trim until 3 scale.

i also try to perform it with the flat file data source component but i face a problem that if the data in the column is empty then flat file data source component read the numeric column as Zero

i hope someone help me coz i need to handle it soon.

best wishes

Maylo

Here is a thought for your Scale 3 situation.

Could you try importing the data into column X as a larger datatype, say (20,5).

Then use two derived value steps to create a new column Y that is the result of conversion from (20,5) to (12,3) and then back to (20,5).

Now compare the value in column X with the value in column Y.

If X is a valid (12,3) value, then it must now have the same value as Y. Otherwise it will be different.

Simulation:

Flat file value: 123456.789

imported to X (20,5): 123456.789

Converted to Y (12,3): 123456.789

Converted back to Y (20,5): 123456.789

(X == Y) = true

Flat file value: 1234.56789

imported to X (20,5): 1234.56789

Converted to Y (12,3): 1234.567

Converted back to Y (20,5): 1234.567

(X == Y) = false

(in my VB days, we would have achieved something like this by going:

y = int(x*1000) / 1000

if x=y then msgbox "All is sweet." else msgbox "Your value has too many decimal places."

|||

thanx SOoooooo much it helps me alot

best wishes

Maylo

|||

The way I normally get round this is to use a script component.

Feed all available output columns from your flat file into the script component.

In the script component add an extra outpt column as a boolean called, for example, blnOK

In the script component's ProcessInputRow Sub add code similar to the following

If IsNumeric(Row.RowToCheck) Then

Row.blnOK = True

Else

Row.blnOK = False

End If

where RowToCheck is the particular row from the flat file you wish to check.

Then use a conditional split transformation to check the value of your new column blnOK. You can then direct your rows accordingly, ie, where blnOK is TRUE rows would go to your default table and where blnOK is FALSE rows could go to and error table.

This is a simple example but you could extend the code by creating a function to check for any data type, string format etc or even create a DLL, which you can re-use for similar situations though this may be a bit over the top.

Hope this helps

|||That RowToCheck in above should refer to the column/field to check NOT a row. Sorrysql

thanx SOoooooo much it helps me alot

The way I normally get round this is to use a script component.

Feed all available output columns from your flat file into the script component.

In the script component add an extra outpt column as a boolean called, for example, blnOK

In the script component's ProcessInputRow Sub add code similar to the following

If IsNumeric(Row.RowToCheck) Then

Row.blnOK = True

Else

Row.blnOK = False

End If

where RowToCheck is the particular row from the flat file you wish to check.

Sorry

Check null value of long data type

Hi, I have a record set that is bound to a table in MS SQL Server. One
filed in the table is bound to a "long" type member variable in the
RecordSet. What will happen to the "long" variable when the field is
NULL in the table?
Thanks!

I will have to admit that I am out on a limb, but I would expect
IsNull to be true for this field.

The simplest is probably just to make an experiment.

Check for Temp Table

How do you check if a temp table exists?
I usually do the following for tables and Views:
if Exists (SELECT 'x',type,Name FROM sysobjects WHERE type = 'U' and NAME =
'EarningsDeductions')
DROP Table EarningsDeductions
if Exists (SELECT 'x',type,Name FROM sysobjects WHERE type = 'V' and NAME =
'EarningsWithRank')
DROP VIEW EarningsWithRank
But I can't seem to find out how to check for a temp Table.
I tried "select * from sysobjects where NAME = '#TestTable'" to see if it
was there and whether there was a type code there, but there wasn't.

Check for numeric value

Is it possible to check whether a column (define as char
type) value is numeric using something like
Select * From table_name Where Field1 is numeric ?
Thanks,
BenYou can use the ISNUMERIC function for this:
WHERE ISNUMERIC(colname) = 1
Note, however that this returns 1 if the data can be converted to int,
float, money etc. So things like "E" and "," in the string will pass the
test. If you post what you mean precisely by "numeric" we can possibly give
a better suggestion.

check data type and maximum length of a field

Hi All,

Is there a way to check the data type and the maximum length of a field?

Look at the INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMN view, it contains the DATA_TYPE as well as either the precision / scale or the maximum allowed characters / bytes per type (where it can be defined manually like VARCHAR)

Check Constraint?

In SQL Server 2000, I want to apply a check constraint on a column type varchar that it is not duplicated. Could someone help me out with this?

Also, should I just make this column the primary key instead of an identity field being the primary key?

What is the performance difference by applying the constraint rather then just making it the primary key?

If the column "STATUS" = 2, then there can not be more than one row

I can not use a unique key constraint because duplicate values for this

Just when the status = 2, there can not be any other rows with the same

Any ideas?

Hi Paul,
Apart from the trigger Tibor suggests, there are two other options:
1. Use an indexed view:
CREATE VIEW Status2Only
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
SELECT SpecificID -- You may add other columns,
-- if that helps for other purposes
FROM dbo.MyTable
WHERE Status = 2
go
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX NoDupsFor2 ON Status2Only(SpecificID)
go
2. Use a computed column (assuming PKCol is the primary key):
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD HelperColumn AS CASE
WHEN Status = 2
THEN SpecificID
ELSE PKCol
END
go
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD CONSTRAINT NoDupsFor2 UNIQUE (Status, HelperColumn)
go
(both versions untested - bewarer of typos!)

Hi Paul,
Apart from the trigger Tibor suggests, there are two other options:
1. Use an indexed view:
CREATE VIEW Status2Only
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
SELECT SpecificID -- You may add other columns,
-- if that helps for other purposes
FROM dbo.MyTable
WHERE Status = 2
go
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX NoDupsFor2 ON Status2Only(SpecificID)
go
2. Use a computed column (assuming PKCol is the primary key):
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD HelperColumn AS CASE
WHEN Status = 2
THEN SpecificID
ELSE PKCol
END
go
ALTER TABLE MyTable
ADD CONSTRAINT NoDupsFor2 UNIQUE (Status, HelperColumn)
go
(both versions untested - bewarer of typos!)

Hi Alejandro,
Sorry for duplicating your reply - I posted my reply from
comp.databases.ms-sqlserver, where the original post was crossposted,
and only Tibor's reply showed there.

ChartType in RunTime

Could I set up Chart type in run-time. The attempt to set <Type> attribute
inside RDL in the following way:
<Chart Name="1">
...
<Type> = Parameters!ReportChart.Value</Type>
was failed
"Deserialization failed: Requested value =Parameters!ChartType.Value was not
found."
Any suggestion?

postings. It seems that both threads have been already removed because they
were too old.
To answer the question: dynamic expression-based chart types are not
available. The closest you can get today is to have multiple charts defined
in your report with different chart types and dynamically hide all of them
(through the Visibility.Hidden property) except for the one you want show.
If you want to change the chart type based on the amount of datapoints, you
might also want to look into using drillthrough actions on the chart. The
main chart would show an aggregated view of the data. Clicking on one of the
data points will then drill through to another report with a detailed view
of the data.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I was heading that way, that post just sounded
like you could do dynamic chart types.
Thanks Again

Chart type dynamically?

How to change Chart type dynamically?
--
asharmaHi Asharma,
As for the SQL Server reporting service, those report's design-time
definition are persisted as XML content in rdl file. For the
control(reportItem) on report, some of the properties support
programmatically supply value(through expression), for example, the
TextBox's value, Picture Item's image url. However, for the Chart report
item, the chart type is not supported to be supply by
expression(programmatically), you need to set it in designer as a fixed
value. As some one has mentioned in you other threads, for the scenario you
want dynamically change the SSRS report's design layout(such as
reportitem's type or position...), you may consider host your report in
some external program(such as an ASP.NET web application) which can
programmatically define/customize the rdl/rdlc report template and render
it.

Chart - Point Labels inside the Bar

Hi People,

I'm with a new problem.

I creted a simple bar type and sometimes the values of point labels are showing inside of bar, This is a problema, because if the length of bar will be short, the value doesn't shows. How can I make to force the point label value outside of bar ?

Thanks

it has a legend loc on the data field properties.

you can change the location by choosing from the 9 blocks.
